Shoulder Problems? Lean On Us
No matter what your shoulder problem might be, there isn't a better place to treat it than Nova Medical Center. Equipped with state-of-the-art medical infrastructure and manned by reputed, internationally trained orthopaedic doctors, the center gives patients easy access to quality, affordable care.
Should resolution of a problem require shoulder surgery, it can easily be done in a day care environment like Nova; which means you get admitted in the morning, finish your surgery and get discharged in the evening. Thus saving time and avoidable expense, without compromising on the quality of care.
A shoulder injury can be very frustrating given your extreme dependence on it for day to day activities. However, the key to solving problems of the shoulder is recognising symptoms early and treatment under professional supervision.
Rotator Cuff Tear
A rotator cuff tear results when one or all of the rotator cuff muscle or tendons become frayed or completely severed.

Symptons
  • Recurrent, constant pain, particularly with overhead acitivities
  • Pain at night that prevents you from sleeping on the injured side
  • Muscle weakness, especially when attempting to lift the arm
  • Catching or cracking sounds when the arm is moved
  • Limited shoulder motion
Treatment
Management of rotator cuff tears involve physical therapy to strengthen the muscle group. Occasionally, the damage is too severe and will require surgical repair. Is Surgery Necessary
Surgery is at times, recommended to repair torn tendons. Determining when surgery may be appropriate depends on the type of rotator cuff tear, the patient's activity level, and the treatments that have been attempted.
Shoulder Instability
Shoulder instability is a problem that occurs when the structures that surround the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint do not work to maintain the ball within its socket.
Symptons
  • Ball sliding out of socket partially
  • Uncomfortable sensation that the shoulder might slide out of place
Treatment
Begin with physical therapy and rehabilitation to strengthen the shoulder muscles. Other treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication. Is Surgery Necessary?
If therapy fails, there are surgical options that can be considered. The surgical treatment will differ depending on the cause of the instability.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a medical condition that involves progressive pain and loss of motion in the shoulder joint
Symptons
The hallmark symptoms of frozen shoulder include pain located along the shoulder joint and restricted motion.
Treatment
A physical therapy regimen of gentle stretches and range of motion exercises is often the best treatment option for correcting the symptoms of frozen shoulder. Anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections may also be prescribed.
Is Surgery Needed?
If the shoulder does not respond to therapy, surgery may be considered for better resolution of the problem. Determining whether surgery is needed depends on the specific case, and is best referred to a qualified doctor.
Hip Replacement
What is Total Hip Replacement?
Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant.
What Does It Involve?
A total hip replacement consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head. The diseased ball and socket is removed and replaced with a metal ball and stem, referred to as the prosthesis, in a surgery that takes approximately 1 hour.
When Is Hip Replacement Needed?
Several hip problems occur that result from many years of wear and tear, disease or injury. The ones that commonly lead to a need for hip replacement are:
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Traumatic Arthritis
  • Avascular Necrosis
What Is The Post Surgery Treatment Protocol?
The patient is allowed to recuperate in a recovery room for a period of up to 4 hours. Medication to control pain is given using a PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) pump. This lets patients administer the prescribed dose of medication on their own.
Care is taken to prevent blood clots at the lower extremeties. Compression stockings are used to force blood circulation. Patients are encouraged to actively move their lower extremities in order to mobilize venous blood and prevent blood clots. Medication to this the blood and prevent clots are also administered.
When can the patient first walk after hip replacement?
The patient can walk with support on the second day after surgery.
When can the patient return home after hip replacement?
If there are no complications, the patient can be discharged after 72 hours and in a month he/she can return to regular work.
What precautions must a patient take after hip replacement
  • Avoid bending the hip beyond 90 degrees for the first 2 months
  • Do not sit on furniture that will cause excessive flex at the hip
  • Do not bend over at the hip to reach the floor
  • Do not cross the operated leg over the other
  • Feet must be kept between 3 and 6 inches apart
  • Do not turn the operated leg inwards
How caan patients protect the replaced hip joint in the long term?
Running and all contact sports are to be avoided as they are too strenuous. Swimmming is encouraged as it increases muscle strength and improves mobility and staminia.
Total Knee Replacement

What causes knee pain?

The knee is the most used and therefore stressed joint in the body. The common causes of pain in the knee are injury, arthritis and infection.
Is there a cure?
This depends entirely on the nature of the problem. Sometimes knee pain can be treated through rehabilitation and on occasion surgery may be required. It is important to consult a doctor for proper advice as soon as the symptoms are evident.
What is Total Knee Replacement
Total Knee Replacement is a procedure in which the parts of the bones that rub together are resurfaced with metal and plastic implants. Precision instruments are used to remove and replace damaged parts of the bone with implants. The surface of the femur is replaced with a rounded metal component that matches closely the curve of your natural bone, and the surface of the tibia/leg bone is substituted with a smooth plastic component.

How to tell if you need a knee replacement
If your knee pain is so severe that it causes difficulty in walking and performing daily acitivities, knee replacement might be called for. However, it is mandatory that these symptoms be taken to a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Doctors try and delay the procedure for as long as possible by using non-invasive treatment. However if the disease is in an advanced stage, knee replacement is a means to achieve relief from pain as well as return to daily activites.
How do you prepare for Total Knee Replacement Surgery?
A complete physical check-up is required to rule out any medical problems that may interfere with your surgery. At this time the doctor will also review your medical history. Do not forget to inform the doctor about any medication that you may be taking. A few routine pre-surgery tests will also be performed. The surgery can result in blood loss which will require transfusion, so you might be asked to donate a few units of your own blood prior to surgery.
What happens during Total Knee Replacement Surgery?
Prior to surgery an IV line will be inserted into your arm to administer medication during the operation. Thereafter anesthesia is administered in the OT. Once anesthesia has taken effect, the knee is scrubbed and sterilized. The surgery then begins with an incision to expose the knee joint. The surgeon then uses precision guides and instruments to remove damaged surfaces. The ends of the bones are then shaped to accept the implants. The implants are then fixed and the incision closed. A sterile bandage is applied to the wound and routine post operative care will follow as anesthesia wears off.

How is the implant affixed int he body?
Bone cement is used to secure the knee implants. What can you expect after the surgery?
A specially designed rehabilitation routine will be started to help regain strength, balance and movement in the knee. 24 hours after surgery, you will be aksed to stand and in 48 hours you will start to walk with support. You can expect to stay in hospital for 3 days after surgery. Your sutures will usually be removed before discharge and you will be advised on exercises to continue at home.
How soom can you return to normal activities?
On an average, patients walk with a cane in 6 weeks and start to drive in 2 months. While the surgery will relieve you of pain and allow you to resume most normal acitivities, this does not include contact sports and activities that put excessive strain on your knees.
How long with a joint replacement last?
Longevity of the prosthesis depends on the patient's activity levels, weight as well as the accuracy of the implant placement. Recent studies have found common implants to be functional in 96% patients even after 20 years. However, it must be understood that implants are not as durable as the natural knee and will eventually wear out and no assurance can be given about its longevity.
